THE
BENEFITS OF NIE
There are many good reasons to use the newspaper in
the classroom. Decades of research has consistently
shown that students who learn from the newspaper in
addition to textbooks achieve more and become better
readers. Below are some good reasons to integrate
newspapers into the curriculum:
- Newspaper
use increases students’ interest in
and knowledge of current events. Newspaper
use helps students improve arithmetic skills,
particularly in regard to fractions, decimals,
currency and averages.
|
- Newspaper
use increases students’ vocabulary and
word recognition skills, and improves reading
comprehension.
|
- Students
who use are exposed to newspapers as a principal
source material have higher achievement scores
in social studies, language arts, and math
than students who rely on textbooks alone.
|
- Newspaper
use in the classroom helps students learn
how to read a newspaper more effectively,
how to use it for additional learning, and
how to use it to solve problems because they
recognize the services it provides.
